Robert is the son of John D. Eakin, who was born at sea, and Martha M. (McQuiston) Eakin from Scrubgrass Township. He was the 4th child of 11 born to his parents. He had 5 brothers who severed during the Civil War. Three were killed and one was crippled for life.

Robert first married Nancy J. Pettigrew about 1855 in Venango Co., Pennsylvania. They had 6 children all born in Irwin Township, Venango Co., PA. In the order of birth their names are: andrew E., Ema, Sylvester, Harrison H., Robert Clark and Mary Elmina. His wife Nancy died giving birth to their last child Mary. His wife's sister Catherine Pettigrew married his brother Alexander Eakin.

Robert then married Permelia Sopher Hardy on November 21st, 1865 in Harrisville, Butler Co., PA. They had 7 children named Sherman Lafayette, Elizabeth J, Levi, John, Bertha & Myrtle (twins) and Louis W. Eakin.
