George Hawley was born in Osnaburg TWP, Stark County, Ohio (Today, East Canton, Ohio) to John and Anne (Gregory) Hawley, pioneers of the State of Ohio.

George moved with the family when he was around 10 years old to Union County, Ohio where they were some of the earliest settlers, developing a farm about 2 miles NE of Milford Center on Buck Run. Local accounts note that John Hawley and his family carved nearly 400 acres of farm land out of the wilderness of Union County to become prosperous farmers by the time of John Hawley Sr's death.

In the 1840s he married Mary Davis in Knox County, Ohio, the daughter of Joseph and Lydia (Shinaberry) Davis. George and Mary were the parents of Valorus Hawley, Margaret Hawley Parthemore, George Dell Hawley, Joseph Uriah Hawley, Delano John Hawley, Altina Mary Hawley and Emma Hawley Johnson.

George was a farmer by trade, farming the land formerly belonging to his father and cultivating it and his family to higher levels of success than achieved by his parents. As of this writing, that land is still being farmed, although it has been out of family hands since the 1960s, now owned by the Nichol family (2015). It lies along SR 4 heading from Milford Center to Marysville.

George died at his home on that farm in early 1888 after a long illness, passing away not long before his older brother Gregory Hawley.

George Hawley was buried near his son and daughter who died before him in Milford Center Cemetery. In 1902, his wife was buried at his side.
