Eldest child of George and Mary (Davis) Hawley.

He enlisted at Marysville, Union County, Ohio on August 18, 1862. Enlistment records note that he was 6ft tall, had black hair, black eyes. He was 19 years old and his occupation was farmer. He served with Co. I, 121st OVI, rank Private. This unit was under the command of Capt. AB Robinson. He enlisted for 3 years. Records show he mustered in at Camp Delaware, Ohio on Sept. 11, 1862 and was paid $25.00 on arrival. Records indicated this was the only payment he received in his service to the Union.

Valorus Hawley died in service to the Union at Bardstown, Kentucky due to illness. Shortly after his death, he was buried in what today is known as Lebanon National Cemetery. His name is still listed as buried there, but there is no marker, and the following notice, in the Marysville Tribune on Nov. 26, 1862 explains:

"A son of Mr. George Hawley, of Union township, a member of Capt. Robinson's Company 121 Regiment, died in Kentucky last week. His remains arrived at Milford on Saturday, and his funeral took place on Sunday, Rev. Wilson of this place presiding. The sudden and unexpected demise of one who but recently went from our midst in the prime of early manhood to serve a bleeding country has filled the hearts of relatives and friends with sorrow."

Valorus was disinterred after a very short time at Lebanon, KY and was buried in his family plot at Milford Center Cemetery on November 22, 1862.
