In his early years he owned a grist mill powered by water in Alabama. He also worked as a shoe cobbler. He served in the Confederate Army as a nurse taking care of the wounded and helping in surgery. He established a school and used the Blueback speller and the McGuffy Reader. He was also a barber. William married 1. Margaret W Polly Beard and from that union there were nine children: Mahulda, Louisa, Susannah, Wilson, Sara, Lafayette, Robert, William and Angeline. William married 2. Sarah Carver and from that union there were two children Leander and Milton. William later married Martha Rebecca Bates.
