First born child of Frederick Bates and Nancy Ball. (Bates was the 2nd governor of Missouri.) She married her first cousin, Robert A. Walton on 9 AUG 1838, when she was 18 and he was 34. Robert moved to St. Charles from his native Virginia. Robert and Emily lived in both St. Charles and Bonhomme Township, likely at the Thornhill Estate built by Governor Bates, where several family members are buried. Emily's husband, Robert, 3 of their children and one grandchild are buried at the Lindenwood Cemetery in St. Charles.
