Woodville was the 3rd of 4 children born to Frederick Bates, the second governor of Missouri, and Nancy Opie Ball Bates. Governor Bates died unexpectedly, less than a year after taking office, when Woodville was two years old. Mother Nancy remarried a few years later to Dr. Ruby and they continued to live in the Bates family estate home, known as Thornhill. At the time of Woodville's death at the age of 16, he was living with his sister and brother-in-law (Emily Caroline and Robert A. Walton) near Lindenwood. Other members of his family are buried in the Bates family burial plot on the Thornhill estate located in what is now St. Louis County Faust Park in Chesterfield, Missouri.
