Opal Maude McLain, daughter of John Fredrick and Leona (Monroe) Hewson, was born in Portsmouth, Shelby County, Iowa and died December 21, 1988 at the Decatur County Hospital in Leon, Iowa age 87 years, 7 months and 17 days.

The family moved to Decatur County, Ia. where Opal's father operated a general grocery store in Davis City. She was a graduate of Leon High School in 1920.

On June 2, 1920, Opal and Charles McLain were united into marriage and resided on their farm in Decatur County near Davis City 68 years. To their union five children were born: Donald, Ralph, Harold, Dorothy and Beverly.

Opal became a member of the Methodist church in Davis City in 1948 and was baptized by Rev. Wheetman. She has been faithful to that congregation. In 1942 she became a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and was a Past Worthy Matron. She was a member of the Davis City Garden Club many years.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Fred and Leona Hewson; sister Margaret Roberts McCreary; three brothers: Russell, Robert and Emory Hewson. In 68 years of marriage there have been no other previous deaths in the immediate family.

She is survived by her husband Charles, Davis City; Don McLain and his wife Juanita, Davis City; Ralph McLain and wife Donna, Albany, OR; Harold McLain and wife Robyn, Albany, OR; Dorothy Boswell and husband Cleo, Mesa, AZ; and Beverly Scroggins and husband Robert, Nebraska City, NE; 22 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; sister, Mary Harrison, Des Moines, IA; sisters-in-law: Ida Hewson, Reedsbury, WI; Grace Bozarth, Lamoni, IA; Berdie Ordway, Wichita, KS; Veta Hanie, Madge Rue and her husband Charles and Retha McLain all of Des Moines; nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.
