She was a native of Palatka and had been a resident of Palm Coast for the past 18 years, coming from Palatka. She had retired from Putnam Community Medical Center in 1990 following 18 years of service, having worked as a technician. She was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy in Palatka. Helen enjoyed gardening, antiquing and traveling. She was a very devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and mother-in-law.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 10 years, Roy V. Matson; two brothers, Pete Johns and Clarence Johns; one sister, Lavinia Blackwelder; and her parents, Tessie and Ruby Roberts Johns.
Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Javier Alvarado of Palm Coast; three sons and daughters-in-law, Daniel and Carla McLendon of Jacksonville, Ronald and Debra McLendon of Jacksonville and Sgt. First Class Michael J. McLendon, U.S. Army Special Forces, and wife, Bonnie, of Clarksville, Tenn.; one sister, Pansy Dingley of Bardin; two brothers and sisters-in-law, William "Bill" and Judy Johns and Sidney and Edna Jean Johns, all of Palatka; four grandchildren, J. Brian Alvarado, Christopher McLendon, Kevin McLendon and Austin McLendon; three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 12:45-1:45 p.m. Monday, Feb. 19, at Masters Funeral Home of Palatka, with graveside services following at 2 p.m. at the Oak Hill West Cemetery with the Rev. Derrell Smith officiating.
