Sidney "Sid" Johns, 73, of Palatka, passed away Thursday, Feb. 4, 2010, at the Putnam Community Medical Center following a brief illness.

Born March 7, 1936, Mr. Johns had been a lifelong resident of Palatka. He honorably served his country in the U.S. Army, having been stationed in Germany. In his earlier years he had worked at the former Hudson Pulp and Paper Corp. in Palatka. He also worked in construction and had helped build the former Putnam County Sheriff's Office on the riverfront. Sid started barbering in 1964 and had owned and operated Sidney's Barber Shop in Palatka for many years. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 3349 of Palatka. Sid enjoyed being outside and gardening. He especially liked growing tomatoes and squash.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Tessie and Ruby Roberts Johns; two brothers, Clarence and Clenward "Pee-Wee" Johns; and two sisters, Lavonia Blackwelder and Helen Matson.

Mr. Johns is survived by his wife of 48 years, Edna Jean Johns of Palatka, two daughters, Pam Froehlich and Pat Owens, both of Palatka; one brother and sister-in-law, William "Bill" and Judy Johns of Palatka; two sisters, Pansy Dingley of Springside and Carol Johns of Palatka; two grandchildren, Brandon Owens and his fianc�e, Ashley Harrison, and Jeremy Froehlich, all of Palatka; and one great-grandson, Braxton Lee Owens of Palatka.

Calling hours are from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. Sunday, February 7, 2010, at the Masters Funeral Home in Palatka. The funeral service will be Monday, February 8, 2010, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Charlie Rabun officiating. In celebration of Sid's life, a video tribute will be shown. Interment will follow in the Oak Hill East Cemetery. The United States Army will bestow the military honors.

Flowers are gratefully accepted or gifts may be made, in Sid's memory, to a charity of your choice.
