Eldest (census) son of Wade Hampton and Charlotte Slatton, he had siblings on both sides in the Civil War. They lived Hawkins co TN, Campbell co TN, Bradley co TN, Polk co TN, Dade co GA and DeKalb co AL. John settled in Marion co TN after brief sojourn to MO.
