Elias Hardcastle, Sarah's brother, wrote in his memoirs
"Our army was so feeble and poorly clad in clothing and at that time we were ordered to Kimisky (?) River to our winter quarters. Then I found out my mother had had her tenth child. A little girl, Sarah Christine, born on Christmas Eve 1862. Daddy had resigned six months after he enlisted and was discharged in September 1861. They almost missed having another baby in the even year of 1862, but made it with a week to spare."
Also the 1880 and 1900 census records both put her birth year at 1861.
