Elias was the son of Eli Hardcastle, Sr. and Susan B PATE. He wrote his own memoirs and they were published by a grandson, Marcus M Lowthorp, called "The Life and Times of Elias Hardcastle."

He was served in the CSA, Company F, 31st Texas Regiment Dismounted and Calvary.

He first married Lizzie Peoples. They were married 10 Dec 1865 in Milam county, Texas.
They had 4 children: Susan, David Eddie, Almeta and Minerva. Only Almeta and Minerva lived to adulthood and had families.
He divorced Lizzie 6 April 1878, Milam county, TX.

He married Cornelia Gregston 11 April 1878 in Pearsall, Frio, Texas. They had 6 children: Pleasant, Armintia, Calpernia, Zenovia, Elias Jr, and Viola. Only Calpernia and Viola were married and had children.

All children are linked except Susan Elizabeth Hardcastle (1866-1867), whose burial is in unknown Milam, TX.
