MRS. M. D. BELL
Luella Carney Bell, daughter of Henry and Amy Carney, was born in Putnam county, Illinois, on September 15, 1870, and passed away at her home near Chariton, Iowa, on January 26, 1945, at the age of 74 years, 4 months and 10 days, after an extended illness with a complication of troubles.
When about ten years of age she came with her parents to Lucas county, Iowa, where they located on a farm in English township and the remainder of her life was spent in that vicinity.
She was married to M. D. Bell on Nov. 27, 1895. To them was born one son, Albert Thomas, who lived but three days. Two foster sons, Wheeler Bell, of Indianapolis, Ind., and Earl Bell, of Chariton, were reared by Mr. and Mrs. Bell, and to whom she gave a mothers loving care. A grandson, Lloyd Bell, has also been cared for in the home of his grandparents since the death of his mother several years ago.
Mrs. Bell had been a member of the Presbyterian church from early girlhood. For many years she was a member of the English Presbyterian church, and was active in the different church organizations. She served as superintendent of the Sunday school for some time. When the English church was closed she placed her membership in the Chariton Presbyterian church.
As a wife and mother she was all that this honored title implies, ever watchful of the interests of her family and their welfare, kind, indulgent and devoted. She lived a faithful Christian life, one filled with kind and charitable deeds and loving service and many sacrifices.
Mrs. Bell is survived by her husband; two sons, Wheeler and Earl Bell, and three grandchildren, Lloyd, Berneta and Margaret Bell. Her parents, two brothers and one sister, William, Bert and Ada Carney, preceded her in death.
Largely attended funeral services, conducted by her pastor, Rev. Bonte F. Grussing, were held at 3:30 o'clock, Sunday afternoon at the First Presbyterian church. A quartette, composed of F. A. Lauan, D. O. Evans, Mrs. C. F. Wennerstrum and Miss Frances Dunshee, with Mrs. Ralph Elder at the piano, sang Mrs. Bell's favorite hymns, "He Will Never Leave Me Alone," and "The Old Rugged Cross."
The floral tributes were profuse and beautiful, emblematic of the high esteem in which deceased was held, as well as sympathy for the bereaved ones. Burial was in the Chariton cemetery. Pall bearers were L. C. Brownlee, Floyd Dillman, Russell Davis, Arthur Hixson, Glenn Gardner and P. H. Oden.
