MELVILLE DARIUS BELL
Melville Darius Bell, son of Margaret and Darius Bell, was born in Lucas county, Iowa on December 21, 1872, and passed away at his farm home north of Chariton, Ia., on March 17, 1952, at the age of 79 years, 2 months and 27 days. He had been in poor health for a number of years but his condition became serious, confining him to his bed since. Feb. 25.
His father passed away when he was an infant and later his mother married Joshua May, in whose home he was reared. He is survived by one half brother, Charley May of Russell, Iowa. Two half sisters preceded him in death, Mrs. Sarah Messler and Mrs. Lola Pentzel
He was united in marriage to Louella Carney on November 27, 1895. To this union one son was born, Albert Thomas, who died when only three days old. Two foster sons, Wheeler Bell of Indianapolis, Ind., and Earl Bell of Chariton were reared in this home, also a grandson, Lloyd Bell, who lives near Chariton.
Mr. Bell was a member of the Presbyterian church from early childhood, but was unable to attend services for several years because of ill health.
His wife passed away on January 26, 1945, and he continued to remain at the farm home where he and his wife had spent all of their married life. For the past four years his great niece, Miss Leona Pierschbacher had kept house for him. Her kindness and patience had been a great source of comfort to him. His half brother and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Charley May and his niece and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Delmar Pierschbacher assisted Leona with his care during his illness.
Three grandchildren also survive, Lloyd, Margaret and Berneta Bell; three great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at the Miley Funeral Home on Wednesday, with the Rev. William L. Peters officiating. The pallbearers were Russell Davis, Floyd Dillman, Dannie DeWitt, Leland Brownlee, Glen Gardner and Arthur Hixson. Music was furnished by Mrs. Hilma Webb. Burial was in the Chariton cemetery.
