A beautiful life ended, a career of 65 years closed on Saturday morning when Mrs. Alice Maria Kitchen Moxley passed into the great beyond with scarcely a warning that the death angel hovered near and before loved ones could be summoned from a short distance.
The immediate cause of death was neuralgia of the heart. Although the lady had been in failing health for some time, her condition had not been considered serious and it was as a great shock that the sad tidings reached her many friends in the early morning hours, telling of the final closing which occurred at about 3 o'clock a.m.
Mrs. Moxley was a dignified, earnest, Christian woman, whose strong, yet kindly character was marked in graciousness and hospitality.
She was a communicant of the Cumberland Presbyterian church of this city, from which the funeral was held on Monday afternoon attended by a large circle of sorrowing friends. She was a zealous member of class Fifteen of the Sunday School, taught by E. L. Moor, and the ladies of the class acted as honorary pallbearers, and sent an immense beautiful floral piece.
The alter and chancel were a mass of violets and greenery, the work of the Ladies Missionary Society, who also contributed a handsome set floral piece.
Rev. James Miles Webb found in Mrs. Moxley a fine subject for a touching tribute and the quartette, Mrs. Baker, Mrs. Berry, Mrs. Routt and Mrs. H. K. Landram, sang in beautiful harmony "We Shall Meet Beyond the River," "Watching and Waiting" and "It is Well With My Souls."
Interment was in the Odd Fellows cemetery.
Mrs. Moxley was born in Ontario, Canada, near St. George, on April 4, 1845, daughter of Martin Kitchen (1818-1897) and Lorenda Crandell (1818-1899). On June 22, 1868, at her parents' home in S. Dumfries Twp., Brant County, she was married to Washington Moxley and soon afterwards moved to Shelbina, Missouri, and here four children were born to them.
The family relocated to Merced in 1901 and purchased fine property in British Colony, have continued to reside there since.
The surviving members of the family are the husband, Washington Moxley, and the four children, Martin, Roy and Miss Elma Alice Moxley and Mrs. Lillie Casad, all of whom are grown.
