Born Lurinda Curfman on June 19, 1864 in Roane County, West Virginia, third child of Samuel Henry and Mary Ann (Cain) Curfman who owned a farm there. Her mother was the daughter of a prominent Baptist preacher there, Reverend Cain. Linda had eight siblings including 1. Michael Pleasant b. 1859, 2. James Washington b. 1863, 3. Permelia b. 1866 m. Smith, 4. Mary Fidela b. 1870 m. Lester, 5. Elizabeth b. 1873 m. Murphy, 6. Martha "Mattie" b. 1875, m. Bishop, 7. Belle Sarah b. 1877, m. George, and 8. Rhoda b. 1883.
