Sarah Amanda Ingram was born in Henrieville, Utah, on November 24, 1892, one of eight children born to Melissa Ann Riggs and Joseph Ingram. She remembered hiding from Indians as a child in Henrieville. They moved to a small farm near Sugar City, Idaho. They ran a hotel and boarding house in town. Many single men who worked at the sugar mill lived at the boarding house. There she met Joseph Tucker and his best friend Melvin E. Arnold. She married Tucker and moved to his home state of Florida. She gave birth to still born Melita in 1912 and Doris in 1915. Tucker abandoned Amanda when she was pregnant with Doris. Amanda returned to Sugar City and married Melvin E. Arnold in 1919. Mel worked as a butcher and the family lived in Boise, Portland, and Provo. They had 4 sons: Earl, Paul, Robert, and Lynn.
