Mr. Seth Johnston, age 88, well known Wyalusing resident, passed away suddenly on Thursday, March 27, 2014 after a brief illness, at the Tyler Memorial Hospital, in Tunkhannock, PA. Seth was born on August 21, 1925, in DuBois, PA son of the late R. Chester and M. Elizabeth Clarke Johnston. He attended Dubois High School, until quitting at the age of 16 to enlist in the United States Navy, where his duties were to navigate and load torpedoes on a submarine in the Pacific. Upon being honorably discharged he returned to Dubois where he met and then married the former Isabelle Benny of DuBois on September 10, 1948. Seth was a graduate of Penn State University earning a bachelor's degree in education in 1951, and later earning two Master's degrees in 1956 and 1963 respectively. During these years he and Belle moved to Estella in Sullivan County where Seth taught school. Seth and Belle operated the Sweet Shop in Eagles Mere for over 10 years, during which time he learned to make homemade candy, being especially known for his chocolate covered marshmallows. They moved to Wyalusing in 1957 when Seth began teaching at the Wyalusing Valley High School, later transitioning into the guidance counselor which he did for a majority of his career, he retired in 1993. In retirement he continued as a G.E.D. examiner. Seth was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish, Wyalusing, PA. He was an active supporter and board member of Bradford County Action. He was a past board member of the Tyler Memorial Hospital. Also a past board member of the Bradford/Sullivan Mental Health-Mental Retardation Program. He also held his real estate broker's license, as well as a licensed psychologist. Seth was a member of American Legion Post #534. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, he was an avid hunter and fly fisherman. He loved Penn State sports especially football, and New York Yankee baseball. Surviving: Daughters: Renee M. Norman Wyalusing, PA Beth Johnston State College, PA Grandchildren: Bernadette Norman Wyalusing, PA Alexander Norman Wyalusing, PA Courtney Norman Wyalusing, PA Great-grandchildren: Madisyn Lockburner Wyalusing, PA Masen Norman Wyalusing, PA Michael Norman Wyalusing, PA Brothers and sister-in-law: Ralph Johnston DuBois, PA Jack and Martha Johnston Punxsutawney, PA Sister-in-laws: Margot Johnston Seneca, PA Irmgard Johnston DuBois, PA Special Friend: Mary Jane Reagan Athens, PA Numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by four brothers: James Johnston, Harry Johnston, George Johnston, and Earl Johnston, and one sister; Jane DeQuinze. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, March 31st, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Mary's Church, Wyalusing, PA with the Rev. Joseph Manarchuk presiding. Interment will be in the Wyalusing Cemetery. Military Honors will be accorded by the Wyalusing American Legion Post #534. The family will provide the flowers and request that memorials be directed to the Center County Law Enforcement Camp Cadet Inc., c/o State College Police Dept., 243 S.
