Word was received at noon Tuesday by Miss Kate R. Dennis at the E. A. Gastman school of the sudden death of her father, William A. Dennis, Tuesday morning about 9 o'clock at Guynman, Okla.. The word came in a message from his youngest daughter, Emma Dennis, who was with him at the time. Death was undoubtedly caused by heart disease with which he has been troubled for a long time. Of late, however, he had feeling much better and death was entirely unexpected. Mr. Dennis left Decatur about two months ago to look after farming interests there. He expected to remain until Sept. 18, after all of the crops had been harvested. Miss Emma Dennis started with the body to Decatur Wednesday morning at 1 o'clock and is expected to arrive here Thursday at noon. Mr. Dennis was seventy-one years old, having been born Aug. 11, 1840. He has been a resident of Decatur nearly all of the time since 1856, a few years having been spent in Concordla, Kan., prier to 1893. At the latter point he was a contractor, street superintendent, and a member of the board of education. Since his return to Decatur in 1893 he has been retired from business, spending most of his time looking after his property. He was married in 1866 to Miss Emma Harris at Decatur, and of their children four survive: Miss Kate R Dennis, Miss Emma Dennis, Ray H. Dennis and Mrs. A. G. Early, all living in Decatur His wife died March 11, 1902. Three grandchildren are also living.
PROMINENT IN EARLY YEARS.--In earlier years Mr. Dennis was quite prominent. He was alderman, representing the Fourth ward during the term of Mayor L. L. Haworth in 1879, and during the term of Mayor H. W. Waggoner in 1880. He was one of the charter members of the Goodman band, being one of the original fourteen who formed the Decatur Silver band In 186O. He continued as a member of the band until it had become the Goodman band, ten years later.
IN THE WAR.--He was a member of Co. B, Eighth Illinois Infantry, enlisting from Decatur, and serving through the war. He was a member of Dunham post, No. 141, O. A. R., for many years. Mr. Dennis will be remembered by the older generation as a nephew of Samuel Ray, a well known city officer many years ago. During his many years residence in Illinois, he had become a well-to-do citizen, with many property interests.
He has been a member of the First Methodist church for the past twenty-five years. The funeral will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock, the services to be conducted at the residence, 715 West Packard, with interment at Greenwood.
