OGDEN - LeRoy Behling, 90, died peacefully at home in his sleep on December 24, 2004.

LeRoy was born in Ogden on April 23, 1914, son of Franz Albert Behling - who emigrated from Germany at age 14 after joining the LDS church - and Agnes S. Johnson, who emigrated from Sweden at age three.

LeRoy is survived by his wife, Alice Talbot Behling, son Dave L. Behling, daughters Sally (Charles) Bohman and Holly Stuart, brother Glen (Beverly) Behling, sister Arlene (Keith) Rackham, 19 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Earl, Melvin, and Ray. LeRoy and Alice were married June 16, 1936 in the Salt Lake Temple.

LeRoy was active in the LDS church, serving in the bishopric, Sunday school superintendency, and numerous other callings, including the Boy Scouts, which was one of his lifelong passions. LeRoy was an Eagle Scout and Silver Beaver recipient. He was an active scouter well into his 70s. He was a faithful home teacher into his 80s.

He was an active community volunteer, earning the Carnation Silver Bowl Award for distinguished volunteer service, awarded by the governor. He volunteered at libraries, schools, and churches. He was renowned for his 'light show', which was an entertaining combination of science and humor.

He was an avid photographer, and was rarely seen without two cameras. He photographed nature, friends, family, and weddings. He 'pickled' snowflakes and photographed them under a microscope. He won awards for his microscope photography of crystals.

LeRoy collected everything imaginable. His workshop was a treasure chest of obscure gadgets, chemicals, mosses, and curiosities, which awed his grandchildren and others. He was a naturalist and 'tinkerer' extraordinaire. LeRoy loved to entertain children of all ages with his slight-of-hand tricks, stories and after-church Life-Saver candies. He was everyones favorite 'huggin buddy'.

He graduated from Ogden High School, attended Weber College, and graduated from the University of Utah with a Bachelors degree in Botany. He worked for a time as a glassblower, making neon signs among other things. Glassblowing was a lifelong hobby. He taught science in both elementary and high school. He later worked in the standards lab at Thiokol. He exemplified the quest of a lifelong learner, taking additional classes at the university, and devouring knowledge wherever he could find it. He taught continuing education classes as well. He had many friends and peers at the university, where he would 'pick the brains' of the faculty and share his own expertise.

During World War II, he spent nearly 3 years in the Naval Air Corps as an electronics technician, spending most of his time in San Diego.

LeRoy, your friends and family miss you dearly, but we feel the peace of your love, and the sweet peace of hope in a glorious resurrection in eternity.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 29, 2004 at 1 p.m. at Myers Mortuary, 845 Washington Blvd. Family and friends may call at the mortuary on Wednesday from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.

Interment: Myers Evergreen Memorial Park.
