He came to America with his father's family in 1850.
He and his brother, John, were in the Civil War. Right after the war, he came home and married Susan Abbeehl (Abbuhl in Switzerland) in 1866. She died in 1868 (possibly in childbirth).
He married next to Mrs. Anna (Balmer) Lewis, April 11, 1869 in Richland Co, IL. She was a widow with 3 daughters.

Margaret, Sarah & Elizabeth are Anna's children by her first husband, whom Jacob adopted. Jacob and Anna had John and Minnie. John died young.
Jacob and Anna had been married 33 years when she died in Oct, 1902. In Jan 1903 Jacob married Mrs. Eva Whitaker, but they soon divorced and he married again in Nov 1903 to Mrs. Elizabeth (Staley) Bushong, who had also been born in Switzerland. He died in 1919 leaving Elizabeth a widow again.
