Maria was born in Unterseen, Bern, Switzerland, right beside Interlaken. (Her birthdate is from a copy of her original birth record there.) She was christened May 3, 1846.
Her uncle Christian VonAllmen had emigrated to Illinois in 1844, and in 1850 her father, Jacob VonAllmen, also brought his family to America. They traveled to Havre, France where they boarded the ship, Lemuel Dyer, and arrived in the port of New Orleans Dec. 5, 1850. Then they probably boarded a steamboat for the trip to St. Louis, where they disembarked and traveled East to Richland County.
