Ralph Hawkins, 79, of 2120 W. 5th St., died early Wednesday at Our Lady of Mercy Hospital after a lengthy illness. Born Aug. 4, 1893 in Breckinridge County, he was a son of the late William and Lydia Cashman Hawkins. He owned and operated a grocery store on W. Fifth Street until 1960, was a member of St. John United Methodist Church and was a veteran of World War I. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mattie James Hawkins of Owensboro; a son, James Hawkins of Owensboro; two daughters, Mrs. Mildred Edge of Miami, Fla., and Mrs. Josephine Gordon of Owensboro, and five grandchildren. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at James H. Davis Funeral Home, with the Rev. Patrick E. McDowell, pastor of St. John United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 1 p.m. today.
