J. M. "Hoover" Hayes, 77, of 109 Shoally Park Drive, died Wednesday, January 6, 2010, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Born February 22, 1931, in Chesnee, SC, he was the son of the late Claude J. and Nellie Cabiness Hayes. A graduate of Chesnee High School, he attended Spartanburg Junior College and was the owner of Hayes Dry Cleaners in Chesnee for over 40 years. He was a longtime and active member of Cudd Memorial Baptist Church and a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War, having received the Bronze Star.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years of marriage, Edith Roland Hayes; a son, The Honorable J. Mark Hayes, II of Spartanburg; a daughter, Melissa Hayes Andrews and her husband Bob of Mayo; two sisters, Geraldine Hayes Nantz of Spartanburg, and Frances Hayes Bobo of Inman; two grandchildren, Jennifer Andrews White and her husband Bobby of Irmo, and Robert Andrews of Mayo; and a great-grandchild, Trace White.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, January 8, 2010, at Cudd Memorial Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Danny Garrett and the Rev. Ronnie Norris. A private committal service for the family will be held in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Youth Fund or the "Future Building Fund" of Cudd Memorial Baptist Church, 1301 Boiling Springs Road, Spartanburg, SC 29303.
