Mr. Bryant Deberry Austin of Wingate, whose serious illness was reported in the last issue of The Journal died Saturday morning. One of the oldest persons in the county, Mr. Austin reached his ninetieth year on the 7th of last December.
Members of the pioneer Austin and Hamilton families, his parents were Bryant D and Elizabeth Hamilton Austin. His father owned the Austin Mill, which in its days was an important place in the community. His wife who was Miss Elena Colon Williams, died January 24, 1934. They were married January 25, 1883.
Surviving are six sons, JB, JR, BP, and BM Austin of Wingate, WO Austin of Peachland, and DB Austin of Charlotte; three daughters, Mrs. Blair Bivens (chp note: Grace Elizabeth Austin) of Monroe, Mrs. HC Nance of Concord, and Mrs. Luke Russell of Matthews; 37 grandchildren, and 24 greatgrandchildren.
The funeral, which was held Sunday afternoon, was largely attended, the Wingate Baptist Church and annex being filled to capacity. Floral offerings were extensive. The service was conducted by the pastor, Rev. DK Shelton, assisted by President Burris. Burial was in the Wingate Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Messrs. Charles Thomas, HE Helms, Sam Love, WL Thayer, JC Helms, and LJ Watson.
