Pvt. Edward A. Burgess C. S. A., 7th Battalion Calvary, Company F Edward Alexander Burgess enlisted in the C.S.S., 7th Battalion Calvary, Company F on August 4, 1864 in Penfield, Greene County, Georgia. At this time the war was raging in Atlanta and most buildings in Greensboro were being used as hospitals. Until this time, the war was remote to Greene County. Most of the county had tried to maintain normalcy. Sherman traveled just south of Greensboro on his march and the war came home. The 7th was formed from companies from the 24th, the 21st and two companies from Hardwick's Mounted Rifles. Edward served in the 7th for six months and was then detailed to the 4th Greene County Militia as a 1st lieutenant. We do not know how long this detail lasted. The records we have show that the detail began on October 1, 1864 and was still active on January 31, 1865. Edward was back with the 7th before the Battle of Honey Hill on November 30, 1864. This was the third battle of Sherman's March to the Sea. This battle was a huge victory for the Confederacy. The Union lost 89 men and had 629 wounded. The Confederacy had eight killed and 39 wounded. Edward was included in the 39 wounded and was sent home to recover. The regiment went on to fight with Robert E. Lee and was the last regiment to leave Richmond. Edward was at home on furlough when his regiment surrendered with Lee at Appomattox on April 9, 1965.
