Henry Harrison Burgess enlisted as a private in the Georgia Volunteer Infantry, 42nd Regiment on 4 March 1862. This regiment was attached to the Army of Tennessee. Henry was elected 2nd Lieutenant in March 1863. He fought on to the end of the war, surrendering at Greensboro on April 26, 1865. The Georgia 42nd Infantry Regiment was assembled at Camp McDonald, Georgia, in March 1862, with men from Gwinnett, DeKalb, Newton, Walton, Fulton, and Calhoun counties. The regiment moved to Tennessee, then Mississippi where it was attached to General Barton's Brigade in the Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana. It fought at Chickasaw Bayou and Champion's Hill, and on 4 Jul 1863, was captured at Vicksburg. Exchanged and brigaded under General Stovall, the 42nd continued the fight in various battles from Missionary Ridge to Bentonville. The regiment surrendered with the Army of Tennessee on 26 Apr 1865 with 5 officers and 126 men. The battle honors of the 42nd Georgia Volunteer Infantry Regiment include the Battles for Atlanta (Peachtree Creek and East Atlanta) The battle for East Atlanta is portrayed in the Cyclorama at Grant's Park. During this battle the 42nd Georgia was attached to Stovall's Brigade. This brigade is featured prominently in the painting as the brigade which has just captured the heavy Federal artillery battery known as DeGress' Battery and shows the 42nd Georgia heavily involved in the fighting around the Hurt House, Ezra Church and Jonesboro.
