From the Friedrichsburger Wochenblatt Newspaper on 30 July 1924 (translated from German):

Mrs. Dorothea Danz, nee Bock, passed away Saturday morning at 9:30 in the house of her son Richard after only a few days of illness.

She was born in Rocklum, Germany, on April 14, 1837, immigrating to Texas in 1856 with her parents, one brother and one sister. After two years in Texas, She married Mr. John Casper Danz and they settled in the vicinity of Fredericksburg. Out of this marriage came 13 children, two of whom died shortly after birth and one son who died in his 27th year. Her husband died in 1887 of a stroke. She had to take upon herself the raising of her children. She made much out of herself even though there were hard times in Texas. There was the restlessness because of the threat of Indians. Then came the Civil War which brought trouble across the land. The deceased had to deal with much. Her only brother was killed in the war. He was buried with 14 other comrades in a common grave in Comfort. These German pioneers were heroes, having to carry the heaviest of troubles and work, trusting in God to get them through. So it was with Mrs. Danz who passed away. As a widow she cared for her children and despite all hard times, she raised them well. Today the children remember with sweet sadness those hard times that their mother bought them through. With gratitude they remember how good their mother provided.

The surviving children: Mrs. Anna Burg, Mr. Arthur Danz, Mrs. Maria Jacoby, Mrs. Mathilde Ellebracht, Mr. Frederick Danz, Mr. Reinhold Danz, Mr. Adolf Danz, Mr. Louis Danz, Mrs. Ida Merz and Mr. Richard Danz.

Other than her children, the deceased left a sister Mrs. Auguste Ottmers, a son-in-law Mr. Emil Merz, and six daughters-in-law. Three sons-in-law preceded her in death. There are 127 grand children living and eleven have died. She has seen1 51 children pass from the family tree. This flock of children was her kingdom and happiness. Despite all her efforts and the troubles that so many children brought, she was satisfied and happy. Such mothers and women make a country fortunate. As long as there are such women and mothers, nothing will fail.

Also such a life so rich in experiences caught the attention of friends as well as the efforts and the works. For a number of days the deceased was feeling an overall weakness and depression. The children were called to her side, as well as the doctor who confirmed the certainty of an approaching death. At the wish of Mrs. Emil Merz, Pastor Leonhard was called to the sick bed of her mother and he with the Word of God and prayer called on the grace of God. Even though she could no longer talk, she expressed with her hands her final feelings.

Quietly and peacefully she fell asleep. The children who she worked so hard for were at their side. She reached the age of 87 years, 3 months and 3 days.

Month, the 28th of July, with Pastor Leonhard and many in attendance, the deceased will be bought to her final resting place. Her six sons will serve as pallbearers. Let us remember, "Where tears are sowed, there is harvested joy."
