The following obituary was published in the Rosenberg Herald on July 18, 1941:
"Mrs. William A. Potter, Sr."
Funeral services for Mrs. W. A. Potter, Sr. were held at the family home in Rosenberg, Friday morning, July 11, 1941 at 10 o'clock. Rev. Ben Behrens, pastor of the First Methodist church, conducted the services in the presence of a host of relatives and dear friends who had come to pay their final respects to one of Rosenberg's most beloved women. The Foerster Funeral Home of Rosenberg had charge of funeral arrangements. Interment took place in the Klauke addition to the W.O.W. Cemetery in Rosenberg.
The following served as pallbearers: O. B. Hogan, G. E. Fain, J. M. Kovar, E. W. Foote, L. R. Beard and Elwood Maris.
The large floral offering attested to the high esteem in which the deceased was held.
Mrs. Potter was born on March 10, 1869 in Murphreesboro, Tennessee, having reached the age of 72 years and 4 months at the time of her death early Thursday morning, July 10, 1941. When a young girl, she moved with her family to Freestone county, Texas, locating near Fairfield. On March 26, 1885, she was married to William Ambrose Potter. Mr. and Mrs. Potter, with their family, moved to Rosenberg, on January 1, 1902, where she remained until her death.
Mrs. Potter had enjoyed the very best of health until September 16, 1937, when she suffered a stroke, from which she practically recovered after a hard-fought battle. She later suffered another severe illness from which she improved somewhat. Last summer, however, she became seriously ill and was bed-fast the rest of her life. She took a relapse about ten days before her death, from which she never regained consciousness; sleeping peacefully into eternity.
Mrs. Potter had a cheerful disposition and was a friend to all of her acquaintances. She saw the beautiful things of life and was anxious to share her joy with others about her. Even during her long illness she was always in a most cheerful mood and was eager to laugh and talk to her family and friends. She appreciated the thoughtfulness of her loved ones and friends during her illness and she never failed to express her love for each little deed of kindness in her behalf. She found much joy and comfort in her children and grandchildren and always lived a life worthy of their emulation. She was a good christian character and never let an opportunity pass to do good for others. She had been a member of the Baptist church since a very young girl.
Deceased is survived by her aged husband, William Ambrose Potter; three sons, Wiley Daniel of Houston and Lewis D. and William Ambrose Potter, Jr., both of Rosenberg; two daughters, Mrs. J. S. Adams of Houston and Mrs. C. L. Davidson of Beaumont; eight grandchildren, Elizabeth Potter, Margaret and Edward Adams of Houston, Billy Potter, Helen, Beth Potter, Chloe Ellen and Lucille Potter of Rosenberg and David Lee Davidson of Beaumont; one very dear cousin, Mrs. Elwood Maris and her daughter, Miss Elfrieda Maris, both of West Columbus. * * *
