Son of Isham Cordell Sheffield (1778 – 1850) and the former Miss Permelia Randolph (1787 – 1870)

Arthur Sheffield was twice married:

During the Civil War, Arthur B. Sheffield enlisted in Company "A" of the 84th Tennessee Infantry Regiment at McMinnville, Tennessee, on 04 December 1862. This company later became Company "E" of the 28th (Consolidated) Tennessee Infantry Regiment in March of 1863. Sheffield was captured at Harrison Landing on 27 November 1863 and sent to Louisville, Kentucky. He was then sent to the Federal prison at Rock Island, Illinois, until he took the Oath of Allegiance on 31 October 1864.
