Gilbert Simon Layne Sr., 74, of Charleston went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, December 13, 2009 in Thomas Memorial Hospital after a short illness.
Gilbert was a disabled coal miner from Pratt Mining, and was a member of the UMWA, District 17. He was a member of the Union Valley Gospel Tabernacle.

He will be sadly missed by his wife of 51 years, Mary Lou Cobb Layne at home; children, Dinah Harper and her companion, Daniel Dixon, of Raleigh, NC, Gilbert Layne Jr. and his wife, Glenda, of Charleston, and Annette Miller and her husband, Doug, of Williamston, SC; 7 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren.

The Funeral Service will be 1pm Wednesday, December 16 at the Union Valley Gospel Tabernacle, Tupper's Creek with Rev. Roy Moles and Pastor Robert Legg officiating. Entombment will follow in Floral Hills Garden of Memories, Sissonville.

A gathering of family and friends will be from 6-8pm Tuesday at the church.
