The Acrees of this area are descended from William Acree who came from Virginia to Bettie Co., N.C., then to Wilkes Co., Ga. soon after the Revolutionary War. As a soldier in the Revolution, he received large tracts of land in Franklin Co., Ga.

5-1 James Knox Acree b. Jan. 12, 1853 Banks Co., Ga. d. May 16, 1923 Stephens Co., Ga. m. Nancy Catherine Banks b. Jan 7, 1860 Habersham Co., Ga. d. April 29, 1919 Stephens Co., Ga. daughter of Russell and Mary Yarbrough Banks. James Knox Acree came to Haberhsam Co. (now Stephens) from Banks Co. in 1877. he became a prominent farmer and a leader in all community activities. When Stephens County was formed in 1906. he was one of the first members of the County Board of Education and also was a members of the county's firs Democratic Committee. he was a loyal member of Tate's Creek Baptist Church and was a Deacon and Supt. of the Sunday School. The children of James K. and Nancy Acree were: 6-1 James R.; 6-2 William Thomas; 6-3 Mary Catherine; 6-4 George Allen; 6-5 Young Davis; 6-6 Ada Augusta; 6-7 Sally Evelyn; 6-8 Henry Lumpkin; 6-9 Retha Jane; 6-10 Hershel Cobb; 6-11 Gladys.

6-6 Ada Augusta Acree m. Arthur Daniels. She taught school in Stephens County for more than ten years.

6-8 Henry Lumpkin Acree b. Dec. 10, 1889 Franklin, Ga. m. India Annie Andrews (see Andrews Family History). Henry L. Acree was a Trustee of Cannon's School in Stephens Co., Ga. and a Deacon of Tate's Creek Baptist Church. The children of Henry and India Andrews Acree were: 7-1 Mozelle; 7-2 Jack Knox; 7-3 Joe; 7-4 James.

7-2 Jack Knox Acree was active in the GEA, GASA, and NEA while in school administration. He served as executive secretary of th Georgia School Boards Asssociation since 1961. He m. Ruby Nell Taylor and their children were: Jackie and Gay Acree.

6-9 Retha Jane Acree m. Zack Martin (see Martin Family History). Retha taught in the rural schools of Stephens and Franklin Co. before her marriage. She is a member of the First Methodist Church of Toccoa and the WSCS. She is an amateur genealogist and hs served as the Registrar of the DAR for many years. She helped organize Green Thumb Garden Club and was its first president. She was instrumental in planning the city park at the intersection of E. Tugalo and N. Big A Rd. She gave hundreds of azaleas for the park in memory of her son Sgt. Clyde Martin who was killed in World War II.
6-10 Herschel Cobb Acree m. Cora Verner.
6-11 Gladys Acree m. Frank E. Harper. Gladys taught in the county schools of Stephens County.

From handwritten notes of granddaughter Retha Jane Acree in the back of her book Banks of Elbert. Civil War Records: Russell Banks enlisted as a private 9-1-1863 at Athens, Georgia. He served until his death of fever at Kingston, Bartow County, Georgia 3-27-1864. He was at the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain, Company I, 66th Regiment.

Russell Banks was born 12-10-1819 Habersham County, Georgia and married Mary Yarbrough 10-9-1850. She was born 2-2-1825 in Franklin County, Georgia, and died 5-6-1898. The children of Russell and Mary Yarbrough Banks were: 1. Jane, married Lewis Terrell [uncle of Dr. Terrell of Toccoa, Georgia]; 2. Sarah Evelyn, married Allan A. Acree [brother of James Knox Acree and Georgia DeLura Acree below]; 3. Nancy Catherine, married James Knox Acree 10-25-1877.[She was born 1-7-1860 and died 4-29-1919. James Knox Acree was born 1-7-1860 and died 4-29-1923, Stephens County, Georgia. Child: Retha Acree born 9-21-1891, married 12-22-1914 in Stephens County, Georgia to Zack Martin who was born 1-22-1888 Franklin County, Georgia.]; 4. Thomas Marion Banks married first Georgia DeLura Acree, second Sarah Thomason. [Note: three Acree siblings married three Banks siblings. The families lived near each other at Currahee Mountain, Habersham/now Stephens County, Georgia. The house of Russell Banks and Mary Yarbrough Banks still stands less than a quarter mile from the house of James Knox Acree and wife Nancy Catherine Banks, which in turn is about a quarter mile from the house of Nancy's younger brother Thomas Marion Banks. The Banks Cemetery where the Russell Banks obelisk and Mary Banks grave rests is less than a hundred yards from the house of Russell and Mary.]
