Gerald R. Ayotte Sr., 94, died peacefully on Feb. 19, 2009, at Gray Birch nursing home after a short illness. Born Nov. 27, 1914, in Van Buren, Gerald was the eldest of four children of Ernest and Clara (Lagasse) Ayotte.
Gerald lived until his teenage years in "The County," migrating with the family during the Depression years in the early 1930s to the Augusta area. There he met the love of his life for more than 70 years, Bertha Z. (Charest) Ayotte, who survives him and is currently residing at Gray Birch.

His youngest daughter, Maryann Ayotte, died at the tender age of 21/2 on Feb. 28, 1960, from leukemia. He was also predeceased by a sister, Anita Goodchild, in July 2008.

Surviving are his wife, Bertha B. (Charest) Ayotte, of Augusta; daughter Theresa J. Cloutier of Augusta and her partner, George O'Donnell, and their family, Theresa Chavarie and spouse David, Albert Cloutier and partner Chris Royce, Angela Nelson and spouse David, Lina Le and partner Mike Michaud, Adam Cloutier and spouse Kelly, Lea Hennigar and spouse Scott, Andrew Cloutier and spouse Bonnie, Aaron Cloutier and partner Clara Junkens, Dianne Knight and spouse John, and Rick Preshong; daughter Pauline Lambert and spouse Clem of Augusta and their family, Scott Lambert and spouse Dominique, Tina Plourde and spouse Bill, and Troy Lambert and spouse Becky; son Gerald R. Ayotte Jr. and spouse Miriam of Mechanic Falls and their daughter, Melissa Furbush and spouse Wade; daughter Donna Ayotte of Tampa, Fla.; and son Larry Ayotte and spouse Debbie of Dresden and their family, Sarah Ayotte, Brent Ayotte, Caylen Ayotte, Mandy Neptune and Mike Neptune. He is also survived by a sister, Germain Parlin and a brother, Clifford Ayotte, and his spouse, Frances, all of Augusta; 35 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.
