Son of the late Isaac Holly Merrell and Paulina Woodhouse Merrell and the widower of Hilda Bryant Merrell. He was a retired welder from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, a U.S. Army Veteran of WW II having served in the Phillipines, and a member of Poplar Branch Baptist Church. Mr. Merrell was an avid sportsman, especially duck and goose hunting on Currituck Sound.
