Edwin Theodore Houser was the eldest of eleven known children of Rev. Martin Houser (born Hauser) (1799-1875) and Susanna Chitty (1802-1867), who married 14 Apr 1821 at Salem, Stokes (now Forsyth) County, North Carolina. After Susanna died, Rev. Houser remarried to a widow, Eliza Burkett Spaugh (1817-18785) on 21 Jun 1868 at Hope, Bartholomew County, Indiana but had no additional children.

Edwin married Johanna Caroline (went by Caroline) Schultz (1827-1902) on 15 Sep 1859 at Hope, Bartholomew County, Indiana. Edwin and Caroline were the parents of eight known children, namely:

1. Emelia Mathilda Houser (1851-1852)
2. Martin Theodore Houser (1853-a1900)
3. John August Houser (1856-1940)
4. Edwin William Houser (1858-1940)
5. Lewis Levan (Evan?) Houser (1860-1946)
6. Malvina Ernestina Houser Bowers (1863-1942)
7. Caroline Louise Houser (1866-a1880)
8. Clara Alice Houser Baldwin (1871-1936)

Olney, Ill., Feb. 12.—Edwin T. Houser father of Sheriff Houser of this city dropped dead, Tuesday morning. He was 79 years old.
