Riley Wilson Mathews, 50, of 207 Dooley drive, who had been in ill health for three years, died Thursday. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Alton Memorial Hospital at 11 p.m. Mr. Mathews, a veteran of World War II, and holder of the Purple Heart, had been hospitalized in Veteran's Hospital, St. Louis, at various times since the beginning of his illness. He had worked as a plasterer until ill health caused his retirement. Born at White Hall, Jan. 23, 1917, he had lived In Alton for 30 years, and was a member of Alton Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars. Survivors are his widow, the former Ida Fry, whom he married in 1934, at Pittsfleld; five daughters, Mrs. James Ellis, Mrs. Curtis Trimm, Miss Joan Mathews, and Mrs. Jerry Cox, Alton, and Mrs. James Stone, Bowling Green, Fla., two sons, Pfc. Riley Daniel Mathews, Ft. Bragg, N. C., and Rodney Lee, Alton; two brothers, Finis Carl, Alton; and Charles, Leavenworth, Kans., six sisters, Mrs. Addie Swift, Alton; Mrs. Alice Richardson, Cottage Hills; Mrs. Sadie Cole, Oaklawn; Mrs. Bridget Buford, Wyconda, Mo.; Mrs. Mary Sucech, Benld; and Pauline Mathews, East St. Louis. There are 17 grandchildren. Two daughters and a brother preceded him in death. The body is at Smith Funeral Home, Alton, where friends may call after 7 p.m. Saturday. Funeral services will be Monday at 10 a.m. in the funeral home followed by burial at White Hall.
