However, in The Register (NEHGS) an article by White, Laundry and Hayward, titled "Joshua Holmes of Stonington, Connecticut 1678-1729)" Apr 1988 pps. 165-176 corrects several mistakes made in the Holmes family in Wheeler's History of Stonington.
Capt' John4 Holmes (Joshua3, Joshua2, Robert1) [page 168-168] lists his birth as 10 June 1702 and died in 1783. They mention this gravestone and state that it was erected at a later date after his death. John has three wives: Abigail FRINK, Mary SMITH and Hannah HULSE. He had children by his first and third wives.
The interesting verse on this stone reads:
"The hungry never went away without being fed, nor the different without being beloved."
