Evergreen Cemetery, aka Stonington Cemetery and earlier it was called Phelps Burying Ground, is located at the corner of US Route 1 and North Main Street in Stonington, Connecticut, 354 North Main Street. It was a family burial plot on property that originally belonged to William Chesebrough until his death in 1667. In 1787 a descendant donated the family burial plot plus the family farm to Charles Phelps, and the cemetery became known as Phelps Burying Ground. In 1865 the cemetery was purchased, enlarged, and became the Stonington Cemetery. The nearly 19-acre burial ground is alternatively referred to as Evergreen Cemetery.
