ALTON -- Charlie Baze, 87, formerly of Hillview and Walkerville, died early Monday, June 25, 2001, at Eldercare of Alton.

Born Jan. 29, 1914, in Scott County, north of Hillview, he was a son of John B. and Anita (Newell) Baze.

In 1976, he retired from Laclede Steel in Alton after 25 years. He was in farming with his father in the Hillview area and worked his own farm near Hardin for many years. He loved to hunt and fish and was a member of Walkerville Baptist Church in Walkerville.

He married the former Alice Ward Dec. 9, 1933, in Hillview. She survives.

Also surviving are five sons, Charlie Baze of Dumas, Texas, James Baze and Tim Baze, both of Alton, Robert Baze of Hardin and Jack Baze of Brighton; three daughters, Doris "Dotty" Harbison of Wood River, Joella Wyman of Hardin and Geneva Duff of Kuttawa, Ky.; 39 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; a sister, Judy Tooley of Decatur; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son, Vernon Baze, and two brothers and four sisters.

Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in White Hall, where services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday.

Burial will be at Walkerville Cemetery in Walkerville.

Memorials are suggested to the Walkerville Baptist Church.
