Mary was the daughter of John C. Johnston and his 1st wife, name unknown, both buried in Carroll Co., Arkansas. Mary's maiden name is sometimes shown as "Johnson" instead of "Johnston" but her father & brothers used the "Johnston" spelling.

Mary had several brothers & sisters. They were:

1) Josephine Johnston
2) Patrick Henry Johnston
3) John Riley Johnston
4) Malinda Ann Johnston
5) Doduria Johnston
6) Robert Lee Johnston

Mary's mother died when she was 4 years old and her father remarried to a widow, Sarah C. Coatney Bingham, in 1870. Sarah continued to raise Mary and her siblings when Mary's father died in 1880.

As a result of her father's marriage to Sarah, Mary had the following half-siblings:

1) Modica Johnston
2) Susan L. Johnston
3) Samuel Marion Johnson (he dropped the "t" from his surname).

There were also several step-siblings because Sarah Coatney had been married prior to her marriage to John C. Johnston in 1870.

Mary Ellen Johnston was married 3 times. Her first marriage was to William B. Walden on Feb 26, 1882 in Carroll Co., Arkansas. They had 1 son, Charley W. Walden, before W. B. Walden died in 1888.

Mary then married T. J. K. Hurd on Jan. 4, 1889 in Carroll Co., Arkansas. They had 1 son, Elmer Hurd, before T. J. K. Hurd died in 1892. Elmer adopted the surname of his stepfather after 1900 and became Elmer Walker.

Mary married a 3rd and last time to John Houston Walker on Nov. 24, 1892 in Carroll Co., Arkansas. They had 5 children.
