Funeral services for George A. Green, Jr., 73, who died of natural causes Saturday at 4 a.m. at the home of a son, will be conducted Tuesday at 1 p.m. in the Union Second LDS Ward Chapel, 900 E. 7200 South.
Mr. Green was a U.S. forest ranger and fire guard for the Wasatch National Forest from 1916 to 1953.
He was secretary of the High Priest Quorum of the Union Second Ward, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was an Eagle Scout and was honored with a Silver Beaver award, serving in scouting 41 years, and as a merit badge counselor for 30 years.
He originated the Union Fort Days celebration in 1947 and established the Spruces in Big Cottonwood Canyon. He trained thousands of boys and leaders in fire fighting and other outdoor skills.
He was born Jan. 22, 1888, in Holladay, a son of George A. and Lucy Ellis Graham Green Sr. He married Lucy Mae Brady, Sept. 15, 1909, in Union. The marriage later was solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.
Surviving are his widow, Union; sons, Forace G. Green, South Salt Lake; Dauchy E. and Doyle L. Green, both of Murray; daughter, Mrs. Dahl (Virgie) Clark, East Layton; 16 grandchildren; great-grandchild, two brothers and two sisters, Clemmon, Frank B., both of Union; Irene Parry, Salt Lake City; Deliah Beckstead, Holladay.
Friends may call Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday from 11:30 to 12:30 p.m. at 4760 South State. Burial will be in the Sandy City Cemetery.
