John Henning Nelson, age 70, died Monday, June 28,1999, in Mercy Medical Center. He was buried at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Marilyn; two sons, David and wife Robin of Cedar Rapids, and James and wife Colleen of Chicago, Ill; a grand-daughter, Katie Nelson and a grandson, Benjamin Nelson; his mother-in-law, Jeannette Reid Johnson of Janesville, Wis.; two brothers-in-law, Robert Johnson (Joanne), and Tom Johnson (Ann); two nephews, Scott and Brad Johnson, and a niece, Anne Johnson; and numerous cousins, including dear cousins, Edith Ricker of Santa Rosa, CA, Stephen Nelson of Salem, VA, and Marlea Trochlell, and Beryl Mulhern of Milwaukee, WI. He was proceeded in death by his parents.
John was born Aug 13, 1928 in Menominee, MI, the son of Carl and Frieda Bocher Nelson. He graduated from Marinette High School in 1946 and service as a sergeant in the US Army, First Cavalry Division, in Japan from 1946 through 1948, and awarded the WW 2 Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal japan. He received a Bachelor of Science degree, 1952, and a Master of Science degree, 1954, in electrical engineering from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He was elected to the Tau Beta Pi honorary fraternity. He married Marilyn Johnson on Jun 25, 1955.
John was employed by Rockwell Collins as an engineer from 1954 until his retirement in 1988. He was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, the IEEE, the ARRL, the Eastern Iowa DX Association, the DX Century Club, and a life member of the University of Wisconsin Alumni Association.
John enjoyed fishing, HAM radio, the Iowa Hawkeyes, and the Chicago Bulls.
