Rufus first married first to Josephine B. Munnell 18 Aug 1859, and divorced in 1863. He then married Agnes M. Keifer on 10 Oct 1867, who died in 1879. On 1 July 1880 he married Addie O. Buckingham and they were divorced in 1895. On 23 Feb 1896 he married Eva L. (Seibert) Smith. He served as sergeant in Co. B, 61st Ohio Infantry and was engaged in the Second battle of Bull Run, after which he was promoted to lieutenant and transferred to Co. K. He resigned his commission in Feb. 1863 and re-enlisted in Co. M, 3rd Ohio Cavalry in Feb. 1864, taking part in the Atlanta Campaign and remaining in service until the end of the war. After the war he was in the saw mill business until 1896 and then farming until he retired in 1903. He also served for 24 years as justice of the peace. He was survived by four sons and four daughters.
