Jonathan was the son of Johannes Heinrich "Henry" Aurand (1746-1819) and Margaret Rebecca (Dreisbach) Aurand (1748-1825).
m1: He was married first to Susannah Whittemyre/Wittenmyer on 13 April 1819 with whom he had four children. They came to Crawford County in 1827 and Susannah died within a year on August 20, 1828.
m2: He married his first wife's sister, Rachel Whittemyre, ~11 months later on 28 July 1829. They had 8 sons and 4 daughters.
Besides his first wife, 2 sons and 1 daughter reportedly preceded him in death.
