Tipton county lost one of its pioneer sons Tuesday afternoon when Joseph A. Lilly, one of the county's best known residents, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Omer Sloan, where he had been for some time. His condition for the past several days had been serious and became critical Monday, his children being at his bedside. Death occurred about 1 o'clock, when he passed into a quiet sleep. The body was removed to the Young funeral home on West Jefferson street for preparation and will be taken back to the home of the daughter, Wednesday noon to lie in state until the hour of funeral servies. The funeral will be held in the Sloan home, Thursday afternoon, at 2 o'clock, with Rev. L.R. Gray officiating, and the body will be placed in a crypt in the Tipton mauseloum beside his wife. Friends may call at the Omer Sloan home at any time after Wednesday noon. Joseph A. Lilly was born of pioneer parents, his father Green Lilly, coming to this section before the opening and organization of the county, and his mother, Mrs. Sarah E. (Wright) Lilly, was a daughter of Joseph and Sarah J. Wright, who came here in the late 1830's. Joseph was the eldest of eight children, and all of his life was spent on a farm. He was one of the progressive type of farmers and stock men and one of the successful men in that line. His education was acquired in the country schools of his day, but he supplemented it by much reading. The deceased was united in marriage on Dec. 23, 1883, to Miss Nancy Porter, who death occured on Dec. 31. At the time of the wife's death, the deceased was in very poor health. Surviving children are Walter Lilly, residing in the Atlanta community; Burl and Nelson Lilly residing in Tipton; J.M. Lilly of Anderson; James Lilly of Elwood; and Mrs. Omer Sloan.
