Elwood Barto

JUNCTION CITY A celebration of life potluck will be held July 5 for Elwood William Barto of Junction City, who died June 28 of age-related causes. He was 88.

Barto was born Oct. 7, 1914, in Chicago to James and Ruth Lamson Barto. He married Frances Pudwill in San Diego on March 13, 1936. She died on May 13, 1977. He later married Stella Thornton. She died in 1995.

His family moved to Oregon from Illinois in a chain-driven truck in 1920 and homesteaded in Junction City. He worked with his father growing and cultivating rhododendrons.

He served in the Navy as a fireman 2nd class on the USS Hovey in San Diego.

He lived in the California cities of Garberville and Whitethorne before returning to his family's homestead in Junction City in the early 1960s. He was a lifetime member of the Long Tom Grange in Junction City and a member of the Eagles for over 25 years.

Survivors include two sons, James of Veneta and Neil of Junction City; three daughters, Mary Himes of Medford, Ruth Ruth of Trinidad, Calif., and Lois Marvin of Puyallup, Wash.; 15 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren. A son, Charles, died previously.

The celebration of life potluck will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Long Tom Grange in Junction City. Murphy-Musgrove Funeral Home in Junction City is in charge of arrangements.
