Pauline Sandoz

JUNCTION CITY - A celebration of life will be held Nov. 22 for Pauline Eugene Barto Sandoz of Junction City, who died Oct. 30 of kidney failure. She was 81.

Sandoz was born May 28, 1921, in Eugene to James and Ruth Lamson Barto. She married Fred Sandoz in Junction City on Jan. 18, 1947. He died March 27, 1965.

As a child, she planted a number of rhododendrons that currently grow in Hendricks Park in Eugene. She graduated from Junction City High School in 1939. She was the first woman to receive a bachelor's degree in forestry from Oregon State University in 1946.

She lived in the Eugene/Springfield area until 1960, when she moved to Longview, Wash. She was the first woman to manage a girls' softball team in Longview. She returned to Eugene in 1967 and settled in Junction City nine years later.

She managed a four-unit apartment complex near the UO. She managed 120 acres of forest land and was a master woodland manager with the Oregon State University Extension Service.

Her interests included spending time outdoors, hiking, camping and fly-fishing. She enjoyed singing and was a member of a choir that sang at the Scandinavian Festival in Junction City. She especially enjoyed spending time with her extended family. She was an active member of the Unitarian Universalist Church in Eugene.

Survivors include a daughter, Sylvia Sandoz of Eugene; a son, Fritz of Honolulu; and a brother, Elwood Barto of Junction City.

The celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Nov. 22 at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Eugene. Burial was at Rest Lawn Memorial Park in Junction City.

Memorial contributions may be made to the OSU School of Forestry or the Unitarian Universalist Church in Eugene.
