At age four, Mertie became very ill with an extremely high fever. It left her mentally impaired to the point where it was difficult to understand her speech. She lived with her parents, Thomas Bays Nelson and Frances Miller, until her mother died in 1908; then she went to live with her sister, Sarah Jane "Sade" Miller and was responsible for small chores. "Mertie" lived with Sade and her husband, Harvey Miller, for a number of years until he died in August, 1924. Mertie then moved in with another sister, Mary Wilhelmina "Wilma" Miller and family but was never satisfied there, calling out for "Sade" constantly, indicating she was homesick for her former home. She died on November 13, 1924 and is buried next to her mother and father.
