Charity Jane Painter, daughter of Louisa (née Stine) and George W. Painter, was born in 1864 in McLean County, Illinois, possibly in Arrowsmith Township, where her father was enumerated in 1865. The Painter family farmed in McLean and neighboring Champaign County.

Miss Charity J. Painter and Mr. John Painter, both of Condit Township, Champaign County, were married on 20 March 1884 in Urbana, Champaign County.* (They were first cousins.) The couple, who farmed in Condit Township, were the parents of seven children (including two adopted):

• Jessie Belle Painter Beabout (adopted)
• Chester Painter (died in infancy)
• Esther Louisa Painter Moore
• Nellie Anna Marie Painter
• Carl Edward Painter
• Ada Fern Painter Armstrong
• Mural Richard Painter (adopted)

John Wesley Painter died in 1927 at the age of 67. Charity Jane Painter afterwards lived with her unmarried daughter Nellie in Dewey, and died in 1950 in Gibson City, Illinois, at the age of 85.
