James Burress was of the Catholic faith. He was mustered into the Civil War at Indianapolis, Indiana into Reg 18 IND VOL INF CO E on 16 Aug 1861 as a Private. He was discharged on 1 Dec. 1863 at Indianapolis, In., because he was re-enlisting. On 1 Jan 1864 he re-enlisted at Indianapolis, In., as a Wagoner. He and his brother William had served in the same REG. & CO.

James and Mary Ann Lauler Burress/Burriss/Burris had been married 40 years when he took up permanent residence on Dec 17 1904 at the Dayton, Ohio U.S. National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers. He was 60 yrs. old when he died & had been a farmer by occupation. James was 5’ 7” T with dark complexion, dark eyes & gray hair. One of his disabilities was a blinding of his left eye. His invalid pension was closed on day of his death, Aug 6 1913. Total of his appraised personal property at the Soldier’s Home was .75 cents. Cause of his death was Mitral Insufficiency. Mary Ann had been his wife, 49 yrs., when Dayton Soldier’s Home called her by phone that day, to notify her of James’ death. Soldier's Home record, had much of this information.
